Special Sammies
By

The next time you’re at Union Square, try the Num Pang Sandwich Shop. It should more accurately be called Nummy Pang. They’re serving up Cambodian-style sammies that will make your taste buds sing. Order at the window on the sidewalk and sit upstairs or eat outside on a bench at Union Square. Either way, you can’t lose.
I had one of the new offerings, the Five Spiced Pork Belly sandwich ($7.50). Tender, tasty pork that shared a crusty roll with pickled rhubarb, fresh cilantro, spicy mayo, grated carrot, and thin slices of cucumber made me very quiet as I took my first bite. Suddenly, the sounds of the world around me diminished until all that existed was me and my sandwich.
The service is fast, so don’t be too concerned if you see a line. It’s cash only and there are no substitutions on the sandwiches. Oh, and you can feel good about the fact that they use natural ingredients, local markets, and sustainable products whenever possible. Really, that’s the icing on the cake because the flavor is what will pull you back. I’m feeling the tug right now.
This is my tasty tasty pork sammy. The toasted bread, the fresh ingredients, the flavorful pork…I hear them all calling to me…

The sandwich board on the sidewalk and some of the minimal seating upstairs.

Order this only if you like good food – the Grilled Skirt Steak Sandwich with crushed coriander and peppercorn.
