Another burger, another city. Yet this place, Good Stuff Eatery, was different. Maybe it was because of the diverse menu of burger creations or that the owner is Spike Mendelsohn, a favorite from the Chicago season of Top Chef. Or that the restaurant practices smart sustainable actions and gives back to the community through a variety of charitable organizations. But, I really think that it comes down to the good food: burgers, fries, and shakes. Plus, the condiment bar with a variety of flavored mayos and mustards.

Hoping to capture the moment in this picture, I chose the blazin’ barn burger (pickled daikon radish, cilantro, mint, carrots, Thai basil, lettuce, and spicy mayo) and a small order of the village fries (fresh thyme, rosemary, and black pepper). The burger packed a mountain of flavor that was spicy yet clean at the same time; the beef was fresh and crumbly, not packed. The fries were hot, hand cut, and herb-a-licious. I actually wonder how long it takes a prep cook to chop the herbs each day; I got a peek at the container holding the herbs on the line, and the container was overflowing. The rest of the menu has traditional and not so traditional burgers (chicken can be substituted), wedge salads, and shakes. Go get in line now!

Two ladies opened the first Teaism in DuPont Circle in 1996 and have since launched two other locations: 800 Connecticut Avenue near Lafayette Park and 400 8th Street near Penn Quarter. Dozens of loose leaf teas compliment the Asian flavors in Teaism’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings. The environment is quiet and provides an enjoyable atmosphere to work, read, or dine.

I decided to order the Vietnamese wrap with ground chicken, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, and cilantro in a whole wheat wrap with a spicy lime mayonnaise. It was difficult to resist the ginger scones, so I ordered those as a snack to have later in the afternoon.

The wrap was fresh, fresh, fresh and the mayo provided a subtle kick of spice with a refreshing lime perk. The torilla was larger than expected, and the ratio of chicken to vegetables was just right. It was exactly what I needed to power through the rest of the day. The gingers scones did not disappoint with the small pieces of candied ginger and crumbly texture. I could see why customers were enjoying a cup of hot tea and these scones while watching the rain pour outside. Regardless of the time of day, Teaism aims to please for any meal.

My last visit led me to Bodega, a beautiful restaurant that instantly transports you to a European dining experience upon entering the room. Their wide array of Spanish tapas and endless sangria were what brought us in for dinner.
The selection of tapas includes cold options like Catalonian Tomato Bread topped with Anchovies, Jamon Serrano, or Manchego. Their warmer selections include Tortilla Espanola, Calamari Fritos con Ali-Oli, and my personnal favorite Patatas Bravas.
Their salads are a very pleasant surprise. I ordered Ensalada de Peras y Nueces, a mix of field greens with pears, walnuts, and goat cheese. It was a perfect portion and the amounts of toppings were more than generous. The light and tangy honey vinaigrette was a delicious addition as well.
Another dish we tried was the Patatas Bravas, warm and golden brown potatoes with a rich and creamy dipping sauce. They seemed to be the Spanish take on home fries, quite an improvement from the diner variety.
The calamari was also a great choice. It was crispy without being grossly greasy. The sauce was also delicious.
The third tapas we orders was not so wonderful. The Brocheta de Pollo al Ajillo con Salsa Picante de Pimiento was quite the mouthful to order and quite the opposite on our plate. Small chicken skewers were rather bland, disappointing after the other dishes were so rich and flavorful.

Other than the chicken dish, they were all generous sizes for tapas, something one rarely encounters. The atmosphere at Bodega is also amazing. The mosaic motif on the bar combines with the ornate wallpaper creating a sophisticated Spanish feeling. The service was prompt and considerate, always bringing extra plates and clearing off the finished tapas dishes.
Bodega would be the perfect date spot, extremely conducive to an intimate conversation. There are great round tables in the front windows, which allow for always entertaining Georgetown people watching.
Whether it is for a date night or more relaxed lunch, Bodega provides a great taste of Spain for any occasion.

Tonic Restaurant is no secret to the students and busy professionals in the area and with it’s delicious salads and burgers, perfect portions and great outdoor seating everyone should give it a shot.

Tonic is located in the heart of the George Washington University campus, making it a great meeting spot for undergrads between classes or for an affordable happy hour destination. The outdoor patio seating offers a great setting for people watching, even featuring outdoor heaters to provide optimal comfort.

As a frequent Tonic diner, I’ve had quite a few great meals there. My latest lunch with a friend offered similar satisfaction. I ordered a daily special, “Southern Fried Chicken Salad” and my friend ordered the “Grilled Vegetable Panini.” My salad had crisp lettuce, avocado, mini french fries, honey dijon dressing and crispy chicken tenders. My only complaint was the chicken could have been more flavorful, but the portion size was more than enough and the dressing had a very light but tangy taste.

The panini is one of my personal favorites and comes with Tonic’s signature tator tots, something that one should visit Tonic without trying. It is a quintessential serving of comfort food. The vegetables were fresh and sprinkled with feta cheese, a very delicious touch.

Our service was prompt, yet not too personable. The combination of a hectic lunch hour and beautiful day seemed to be weighing on the staff. An interesting touch on the inside tables is that every one has crayons and is covered in paper, providing entertainment value for the kid at heart. Tonic also features daily happy hour specials from 4-7pm every weekday. These include half price draft beer, $4 tator tots, and 50 cent wings. This is a favorite among young professionals in the area who frequently crowd the down stairs bar after work.

Another favorite selection from Tonic are there infamous burgers. Their topping combinations include everything from guacamole (which I highly recommend!) to the more traditional fried onion and pickles. They also have veggie and turkey burger options, appeasing their vegetarian diners. The “Build-a-Burger” allows you to be the chef and pick from an array of cheeses, sautéed onions, sautéed mushrooms, roasted red peppers, ham, bacon, fried egg, chili, guacamole, avocado, banana peppers, onion straws, & pico de gallo!

Tonic is a great choice for a quick yet delicious meal without going in to Georgetown and most plates are between $10-$15, making it very affordable as well.

Kushi, located on 5th and K Street in the CityVista building, brings not only a fresh new look to the growing Mt. Vernon Triangle area, but some of the freshest nigiri I’ve ever had!

Spending my last “official” night of living in the DC area, my friends and I attempted to make Kushi’s Happy Hour on a bustling Friday night. Sadly, the rainy weather and habitual tardiness of large groups caused us to miss our 6:30pm reservation. However, after speaking with the very gracious and accommodating staff (who I later learned were the owners!) we were able to seat our complete party, and even add on a couple extra people! This was no easy feat on a busy Friday night, but the staff truly went above and beyond to accommodate our party!

Once we were seated, we perused the menu, which offered quite a variety! Promoting the first Japanese Izakaya-style restaurant in DC, Kushi includes a variety of grilled meats, vegetables, bar snacks and of course, fresh, fresh sushi! The name “izakaya” is a a combination of the Japanese words “i ” (to sit) and “sakaya” (sake shop). And to label Kushi as a “sake shop” is quite an understatement! From sashimi to sake, Kushi definitely offers it all! Such a huge selection of Japan’s finest, you’ll want to try every last bite!

As we were quite a large group, we opted to try a bit of everything, and were nothing short of impressed! Though the portions can be smaller than expected, the flavors make up for it in abundance! The idea of an izakaya is to offer a wide variety of small snacks with your choice of sake, beer or any libation! And, since portions are smaller– so is the price! Prepare to order in parts and gradually end up with a complete and satisfying meal!

We sampled succulent pork belly, wasabi chicken skewers, crispy chicken skin and just about every nigiri on the menu. And, I must say, I’m a HUGE fan! The freshest catches of the day are available from their small, but distinguished fish market– complete with lobster and fresh Kumamoto oysters!

Word to the wise, if you’re looking for creative, trendy sushi rolls, Kushi is not the place for you. You’ll find no average sushi bar here. Think and expect authentic, simple, delicious dishes made from the freshest ingredients!

As I mentioned before, I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting the co-owners, husband and wife team, Darren and Ari. Hailing from New York City, this dynamic duo certainly knows how to make a guest feel welcome and taken care of! They have managed to bring a neighborhood feel with a chic and stylish scene to DC’s up and coming Mt. Vernon Square. If you find yourself scouring the streets of Gallery Place looking for something new, head just a few short blocks north and discover the wonder within Kushi Izakaya & Sushi! You’ll be wondering where DC’s Japanese cuisine has been hiding!

Supplanting a wealth of fresh seafood paired with it’s exquisite architecture and elegant design, DC Coast quickly became the place for power hungry fine dining. Stellar service, along with artistically crafted dishes combined to create a DC great.

Following an exciting and historic election week, we decided to go to DC Coast to celebrate my brother-in-law’s birthday. Having celebrated his birthdays here in the past, we were excited to return to, what in our minds, is a DC staple; a go-to restaurant that offers the unwavering service that we have become accustomed to.

The starters, which for the most part have become my favorite at most restaurants, were definitely the highlights.

Delicious “Poisson Cru” or tuna tartare tossed in fresh lime juice and coconut milk, served in a carved coconut with wonton crisp spoons…went over very well with my brother-in-law, who is a HUGE tartare fan.

My sister, who is always up for some raw-bar action, opted for the Iced Blue Point Oysters topped with a Champagne Sabayon and served with a side of Frozen Level Vodka. Oyster shooters, indeed! The flavor combinations and perfectly chilled temperature of the oysters (thanks to the vodka) were excellent.

As we moved on to our entrees, (which sadly, included a bit of a lull) I was disappointed to find that though each dish was beautifully plated, the newness and originality of the flavors that had been so impressive on our initial visits, seemed sub-par. I am by no means implying that the entrees were horrible. On the contrary, they were all very good….solid even, but that’s it.

The best of the entrees (three of which were fish) was a Cider Brined Pork Chop served with delicately braised Red Cabbage, Roasted Pears and topped with a slightly sweet cider jus. This was a wonderfully executed dish, but being that we generally come here for all things “coastal”, it seemed strange that the pig won the day.

So, as we fast forward to the present, it seems that while the opulence and grandeur of the dining room remains, the innovation and excitement of the menu seems to have lost a bit of it’s luster. DC Coast remains to be a crowd favorite, and is still an excellent choice for impressing clients at those power luncheons. If you are looking for beautiful ambience and impressive architecture, this is definitely the place. But, if you’ve recently dined at many of DC’s newer and upcoming establishments, you might agree that the level of service and simplicity of the menu could use a bit of a facelift.

Tackle Box, the neighbor and sister restaurant to the fancier, Hook Restaurant, offers a wonderful seafood selection of New England favorites. Though located amidst the hustle and bustle of M Street’s endless pubs and boutiques, Tackle Box is able to capture the feel of a beachfront eatery, complete with fishing nets and wooden picnic tables. Our order(s) of the day? We started off with a Clam Strip Roll, served with a hefty side of homemade fries. They also offer the ever famous Lobster roll, but we wanted to have some variety (and save a few bucks).

Next, we moved onto the Fisherman’s Maine Meal, complete with Speckled Trout and our choice of two sides. We chose the classic mac n’ cheese and coleslaw. This daily combo comes with your choice fish, prepared to order with your choice of sauce and two sides for the bargain price of $13.99! I know it’s sacrilege as a foodie to claim Kraft as my favorite mac n’cheese, but I must admit– this was pretty delicious!

And, of course, last, but certainly not least, we come to dessert. Cited as one of DC’s Best Blueberry Pie, this was another great call. Though I’m not a huge fan of Maine’s popular harvest, this blueberry pie packs in such fresh and natural blueberry flavor, it’s hard to resist! And for those blueberry lovers out there- check out this pic!! How many pies have you seen pack in that many berries??

So, as for all you New England fans out there who are searching for your Lobster fix, look no further! Tackle Box is the one and only LobsterShack in DC and serves everything your Northeastern heart could ever desire!! Foodies, keep a look out for this one–its definitely here to stay!

Word to the wise: At the present time, liquor is still pending, so as unfortunate as it is that you can’t enjoy a nice Otter Creek with your oyster roll, it is still worth the trip!
