A Taste of Tawan’s Home
In a neighborhood filled with Asian delights, Tawan’s Thai Food outshines all the rest. Though its tiny space only allows for fewer than 10 tables, this family-owned restaurant named after the owners’ son Tawan, commands as much respect for its quality ingredients and dynamic flavors as some of the pricey big-name Thai restaurants in the city. Its friendly staff welcomes you as one of its own, sitting you next to the bright yellow walls covered with décor by none other than Tawan himself. Start off with the Sum Tom (papaya salad) or the Thep Sa-Wei (crepes filled with shrimp, chicken, peanuts, and veggies). On a cold day (which is everyday in the Richmond area), warm your insides with a bowl of delicious Silver Noodle Soup. Try the Pumpkin Curry or one of their sautéd entrees. They also have a nice selection of vegetarian dishes such as the Gaeng Khiaw-Warn (tofu and veggies in green curry and coconut milk). Most dishes allow you to choose your level of spiciness: mild, medium or hot. Warning: They are serious about their spice—a medium Sum Tom left me in tears! If you’re having trouble taking the heat, cool your taste buds with a refreshing glass of Thai Iced Coffee. Complete your meal with a sweet and tart Mango with Sticky Rice.
